📝 Report | Royals share points with Man City

Reading earn well contested draw against title challengers

18 October 2020

Reading FC Women walked away with a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Madejski after a 3rd minute opener from Amalie Eikeland saw Reading in front for almost an hour before Sam Mewis equalised in the second-half.

In a complete contrast to the previous week’s game against Birmingham, it was the dream start for Reading as Natasha Harding went careering down the right-hand side to deliver a ball in for Amalie Eikeland, but the Norway international was just unable to get enough on it and the ball fell to Lauren Bruton. Bruton got a shot in which had City goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck at full stretch, just able to tip it onto the bar for a corner.

The resulting corner came in from Brooke Chaplen and Eikeland met it at the front post to nod the ball past Roebuck and into the City net to give the Royals the lead on 3 minutes.

City enjoyed a spell of possession following the goal as they looked to get back in the game, and both Grace Moloney and Molly Bartrip denied the equaliser with goal-line clearances.

Moloney later also denied Georgia Stanway as she tipped her effort over the bar with a great save for a City corner.

Reading defended resiliently for the remainder of the first half, whilst continuing to break down the channels and threaten the final third, but ultimately held onto their lead going into the break.

The visiting side came out aggressively to start the second-half, looking to bombard the Reading goal. Within 10 minutes of the restart they had their equaliser as Sam Mewis powered her way to the edge of the Royals box and fired a shot low and to Moloney’s left.

Danielle Carter made way for Rachel Rowe as Reading looked to get fresh legs on the field. City continued to press as Moloney denied Georgia Stanwell before the away side had a pair of corners in quick succession, threatening the Reading goal on both occasions.

Reading had their own chances through Chaplen and Bruton, but City seemed to be the more aggressive side and pressed the Reading box more frequently.

Reading, however, defended well, dug deep and fought off the onslaught from the visiting side for a well-earned point.
