The sun began to go down, the lights on the Madejski Stadium pitch flickered into action and the ink on Lewis Gibson's contract dried. The Everton defender had signed for the Royals on loan until the end of the season.
"I’m delighted. It’s been a long day, but I came down here early this morning, got the deal done and I’m happy to be here," he said after putting pen to paper yesterday evening.
"As soon as I spoke to the manager, I was set on coming here. I spoke to him on the phone and then I met him in person a few days ago.
"He seems a very honest manager, he knows what he wants. We have similar thoughts on how we want to play and we spoke about the analysis of the game. I can’t wait to get to work on the training ground and get started."
He comes to a team who have begun the season well, challenging for a place in a defensive line who haven't yet conceded a league goal.
"No pressure eh? Two wins from two, top of the league…can’t be much wrong with that," he smiled.
"I’ve seen the talent Reading have in the first team and this is a massive club. And they’ve started flying – hopefully we can keep the momentum going.
"Anywhere you go in the Championship, you know you have to have a lot of talented players competing for your place. And that’s what we’ve got here.
"So I just want to help the club get as high in this league as possible. We know the talent of the team, we know the size of the club, we know where we want to be and we’re going to try to get as high as possible."
And what can we expect from Lewis? "Calm, composed, I like getting on the ball, playing out from the back.
"But I also love defending, putting my body on the line, keeping cleans sheets and getting three points.
"I feel good, very good. I’ve managed to get a few games in with Everton against Preston and Blackpool since we’ve been back in pre-season and I feel sharp and ready to go."
