💬 “We create a plan and prepare the players”

Pauno and his players prepare to take on Cardiff City this weekend…

Two wins from two and the Royals are high in confidence. But Cardiff City bounced back from an opening day defeat to win on the road at Nottingham Forest last weekend so will be in good spirits for the visit of Reading on Saturday.

“I’m happy to see the team improving and winning games,” Pauno began. “But we have to be cautious with the expectations, keep our feet on the ground. The next game is our next goal, our next opportunity to win.

“We know it’s not going to be easy – we have a very strong team in front of us, playing on their home soil. And we go to them off the back of a good win for them away from home. So that is in their favour.

“But we are going to prepare the best we can. Our best is our pinnacle. So we will work towards being successful against a strong opponent.”

The Royals have six points and have yet to concede a league goal so far this season, but only two games into a 46-game campaign, the Royals boss is right to play down expectations after wins over Derby County and Barnsley.

“We have to be careful with expectations, this season has just begun. We are only at the very start. A good start to the season is always what we want to have, but we will approach one game at a time and play to win every game.

“The most important thing for us is to create a good plan, prepare the players in the best possible way, where everyone knows what to do on the field at any given moment - allowing us to control everything we can control.

“All the ingredients should be there – this week of training was fantastic, the mood was great, the guys worked very sharp and very hard.

“And now, just a couple of days away from kick-off, we have time to polish all the things we have to polish and be ready for the game in Wales.

“They are a good team though coming from a good result. We know their strengths. And, on the other side, we know what we can do well and this is what we can improve.”

The Royals boss has the option of including a new face in his squad for the weekend and Lewis Gibson has enjoyed two training sessions with his new club already, having put pen to paper on a loan switch from Everton on Tuesday evening.

“We have had a couple of training sessions with Lewis which have been very good. He is a very energetic, very smart young player who wants to learn but at the same time with the experience under his belt.

“He’s a very good addition for the team – I think he’s going to improve our competition on the team and the depth of the squad.”
