Even though this weekend’s trip to Norwich is a dead-rubber for both teams, there are still things on offer for the Royals. The result won’t affect the outcome of the campaign, but it’s an opportunity to try to turn on a performance and hopefully to merit a good result too.
Midfielder John Swift, who made just his 12th appearance of the campaign last time out against Swansea, wants to continue building on his fitness after an injury lay-off – and wants to take a positive couple of results into the summer break.
“We are going to go out and try to win the game,” Swift said. “For me, I haven’t played a lot… so I’ll look to go out and build my fitness, try and get a goal.
“We know the situation – Norwich are going up and we’re not going into the play-offs. So now we’re looking for a performance, something to build on going into next season.
“They are two nothing-games, but that might mean time on the pitch for some of the players who haven’t played as much, or the young lads. So that when we go into next season we’ve got a bigger squad.
“You don’t step onto the pitch thinking, ‘it doesn’t matter whether we win or lose’. You want to win, no matter what.
“On a personal level, I want to give the best performance I can. I haven’t been able to play as much as I want to this season, so it’s a chance for me to go out and play a competitive game of football. I’ll be looking forward to it. Irrelevant of where we end up, these are two games that we want to win.”
