⚽ Charlton Athletic to take on Royals in behind closed doors warm-up

Adkins’ Addicks add themselves to our pre-season schedule

8 June 2021

With Premier League opposition already confirmed at Madejski Stadium in the form of West Ham on Wednesday 21 July, 7pm kick-off, we can now confirm that Veljko Paunovic’s men are also set to host League One opponents three days later – Charlton Athletic will be the visitors to Madejski Stadium in a behind-closed doors meeting on Saturday 24 July, kick-off 2pm.

It has been mutually agreed that this friendly will be played behind closed doors. However, we intend to live stream all the action to our supporters via the club’s official website. Further details of how fans will be able to follow every kick of our meeting with the Addicks will be confirmed next month.

Charlton narrowly missed out on making the end-of-season play-offs on the final day in League One last season, finishing in 7th place despite beating title-winners Hull City at the Valley on the final day of the 2020-21 campaign. So, much like Reading, they will be looking to go one better in 2021-22 and challenge for a top six spot when the real action begins in August

This friendly will pit ex-Royals boss Nigel Adkins against current Reading manager Veljko Paunovic in RG2 – and it may also see the return of former Royals full-back Chris Gunter, should he need minutes under his belt after his Euro 2020 campaign with Wales.

We last met Charlton less than a year ago, winning at the Valley courtesy of a 3rd minute George Puscas penalty as the Addicks fought in vain against relegation during a Project Restart period that saw clubs battled to complete a COVID-interrupted 2019-20 schedule.

Earlier in that same season, the Addicks had started their first season back in the second tier with a flourish and earned a 2-0 win over the Royals at the Madejski courtesy of second half goals from Jonathan Leko and Lyle Taylor’s late spotkick.

This friendly will take place just two weeks before the start of our Championship campaign and the competitive start to our 150th anniversary season.

Details of more pre-season friendly action for the Royals will be announced in due course, so stay tuned to readingfc.co.uk.
