Royals boss Veljko Paunovic was quick to heap praise on midfielder Josh Laurent, after an impressive debut campaign in blue and white hoops saw our supporters vote him as their Player of the Season for 2020-21.
The manager paid tribute to the reliable midfield man, who ended his first year at the Madejski by being awarded with the captain’s armband on the final day, in the absence of skipper Liam Moore.
He said: “He’s had a fantastic season, I’m very happy for him and proud of his achievements. He’s worked hard and I think he has benefitted from the huge amount of personality he has.
“He’s shown our fans and people all around the country how good he is, but also he was smart enough to know the team help him to look so good and that his safe place is the team.
Fan-favourite Laurent registered 45 appearances during his maiden year in the Championship, and provided his team with three goals and three assists in the process since arriving on a free transfer from Shrewsbury Town in the summer.
Pauno added: “Even when things didn’t go well for all of us, he was smart in using the team as a resource, and his teammates have helped him to achieve this.
“I see his achievement as a work of everyone, especially his teammates who’ve helped him to be successful this year.
“On Saturday we wanted to praise him with the captaincy, and that came from Liam who is our captain, which also speaks highly about his personality and his generosity in recognising his teammates.”
