Keown‘s Story:
Niall, is the son of the former Arsenal and England international Martin Keown, who also had a brief spell as a Royal towards the end of the 2004/05 campaign.

He joined up with our Academy in 2011 at the age of 16, having previously been playing in the local boy’s league around his parents’ home in Oxford.

He studied at the Abingdon School in Oxfordshire, which is better known for its rugby rather than football, and signed a professional contract with the club at the age of 18.

Keown was an important member of the 2012/13 Academy side, and played a vast amount of games for the U21s in the following season, despite still being eligible for the U18s.

He became a regular in Martin Kuhl’s side that lifted the Premier League Cup in its first year running, and went on to gain promotion with the same side in the resulting campaign, finishing runners-up to Middlesbrough with a spot in Premier League Division One.

The same year also gave way for Keown’s first team debut. Having been a feature on the bench the previous season when the Royals hosted Nottingham forest, Keown stepped out as a substitute on our hallowed turf when we welcomed a visit from Brighton in March.

Four days later he made his first start within the heart of the defence, given a chance to show his worth as part of a much changed Reading side that was preparing for an FA Cup quarter-final replay against Bradford just two days later.

That March, Keown also earned a call up to the Republic of Ireland U21s side, despite having previously been back-up for the England U18s.

Niall spent the latter part of 2016-17 on loan with Partick Thistle - making 16 Scottish Premiership appearances and winning the club's Player of the Month gong in March 2017.
