Long‘s Story:
Long joined our Academy from Irish side Cherry Orchard in 2012, and fit straight into our U18s setup for the upcoming season.

A reliable ever present, he helped the Royals in reaching the Barclay’s U18s Premier League final against Fulham that May.

Throughout the season he was commonly deployed at right-back. Comfortable in moving forward, he netted twice and made a handful of assists to setup his teammates along the way.

In 2013/14 he was a regular in the U21s side that won the first ever Premier League Cup, defeating Manchester City 4-3 on aggregate at Madejski Stadium in April.

The following year he was again a stable name on Martin Kuhl’s team sheet, achieving promotion to Premier League Division One as runners-up to Middlesbrough.

In the same year, Long earned his first call-up to the Republic of Ireland U21s squad alongside fellow teammates Pierce Sweeney and Shane Griffin, having already been capped on several occasions for the U18s side.

He made his Reading first team bow on 26th August 2014, coming on as a substitute for Nigel Adkins’ men in an away journey to Scunthorpe United in the second round of the Capital One Cup.

Loan spells at Luton, Cambridge United and an FA Cup run and promotion earned whilst with Lincoln City in 2016-17, led to the end of his contract at the end of that season.
