Central-defender Gabriel Osho is another success story for the progression pathway through the Academy; he joined the club as an eight-year-old, and eventually debuted at the age of 20.
Having risen through the ranks, he was part of an Under-18 squad which reached the FA Youth Cup Quarter-Final in the 2015-16 season; that run to the last eight owed a lot to Osho’s stoppage-time equaliser against Sheffield United in an earlier round, which had allowed the Royals to progress after extra time.
Osho’s first taste of open-age football came in the 2017-18 campaign, where he would spend a spell out on loan at Maidenhead United. Later that season, he was a goalscorer in the Royals’ Premier League 2 Play-Off fixture away at Aston Villa, though it was the hosts who progressed to the final.
He spent two months out on loan at Aldershot Town in 2018-19; his impressive form with the Shots meant that he was back amongst first-team contention when he returned to Reading.
Having been on the bench the week before, the defender debuted against Middlesbrough in December 2018 and played the entirety of the fixture at Madejski Stadium.
In January that season, he agreed terms to join Bristol Rovers on loan, returning to RG2 in time to captain the Under-23s as they took on Germany’s elite, Bayern Munich in the Premier League International Cup that April.
