Joining the Royals at Under-16 level after being released by Fulham, Richards showed steady improvement throughout his first year before quickly excelling in the left-back berth.
Capable in a multitude of positions, the youngster progressed to the Under-23s in the 2016-17 campaign where he would make 22(+1) appearances and scored a single goal against Sunderland.
Richards was part of the travelling party which went to Oosterbeek for pre-season training ahead of the 2017-18 campaign – he was the only member of the squad which played in all four fixtures on that tour, which included two games per day on two occasions!
The defender was drafted in as a substitute on the first game of the season against Queens Park Rangers – and after Jón Daði Böðvarsson picked up an injury, Richards played the final half-hour as a substitute.
His maiden start came against Gillingham in the first round of the Carabao Cup on 8th August 2017 – a young Royals squad were 2-0 victors that evening.
It would prove to be something of a breakthrough campaign for the youngster; he would go on to make a total of 16 appearances for the senior side, finding the net against Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United.
Impressing audiences when out on the pitch, another 12 appearances in defence in 2018-19 helped the Academy graduate to a first-ever international call up to represent the England Under-21 squad for European Championship Qualifiers against Turkey and Kosovo in September 2019.
