Defender Tennai Watson came through our Academy to progress to the first team; he featured heavily for the Under-21s during 2015-16, and debuted for the senior side the following season.
The defender started in a number of key victories for the Royals' youth side throughout the campaign in 2015-16, including the 1-0 victory over Leicester City at Hogwood Park, a 2-0 away win against Everton and a closely fought 3-2 win over Middlesbrough.
The young full-back was part of the Under-18s side that reached the FA Youth Cup semi-final back in 2014, narrowly losing out over two legs to Fulham two years ago.
Tennai started training with the Royals first team in April 2016 and was given squad number 43 ahead of the Sky Bet Championship clash against Leeds at Elland Road. The defender was then named on the bench for three of the last four first team games that season.
Watson made his professional debut as a 66th minute substitute for Jordan Obita in a 1-0 home win over Preston North End on the opening day of the 2016-17 season and continued to feature in the first-team squad on a regular basis throughout the season.
Injury hampered his involvement throughout 2017-18, but he linked up with AFC Wimbledon ahead of the 2018-19 campaign on a season-long loan spell with the League One outfit.
28 appearances for the Dons across league and cup competitions, Tennai continued his development by joining Coventry City on loan for the remainder of 2019.
After the Sky Blues’ fixture with Walsall in the Football League Trophy ended in parity after 90 minutes, Watson kept his cool to score the winning penalty in the shootout to ensure a bonus point for the hosts on his second appearance in the West Midlands that September.
