Mancunian striker Sam Smith joined Reading’s Academy after being released by hometown side Manchester United in 2014.
After signing his first professional contract in the summer of 2016, Smith spent a loan spell with Bishop’s Stortford in 2016-17 and netted twice for the Hertfordshire outfit.
Smith also represented our Under-23 side on 20 occasions that season, and included in his seven goals was a sole strike against former side United.
After being included in the squad for the pre-season tour to the Netherlands ahead of the 2017-18 campaign, Smith was named on the bench for the first game of the new Sky Bet Championship season away at Queens Park Rangers.
And then on 8th August 2017, Smith was handed a full debut as he was named in the starting eleven for a fixture against Gillingham in the Carabao Cup, which the Royals won 2-0.
In the following round of the competition, Smith netted his first goal in professional football as he wrapped up a 3-1 AET win against Millwall.
He made 11 senior appearances for the Royals in 2017-18, and he registered his first Championship goal in Norwich that March.
Cambridge United was the location for Smith during the 2019-20 season after he penned a season-long loan deal at the Abbey Stadium. The striker netted on eight occasions during 30 appearances for the U's.
League Two side Tranmere Rovers then secured Smith's services on loan at the start of the 2020-21 campaign, however having been limited to just six appearances at Prenton Park, he returned to the Royals and departed again, on loan to promotion hopefuls Cheltenham Town until the end of the season.
