Josh Barrett is a strong and powerful attacking midfielder who came to the Royals' attention at an early age.
A youth international with the Republic of Ireland, having held his own alongside high calibre players, Barrett also captained the Under-23’s to the quarter-final of the FA Youth Cup.
He made his bow for the senior team from the bench in the late stages of the Royals’ visit to Huddersfield Town in March 2016, becoming the 39th player to have graduated from the Reading Academy and represent the first-team.
Josh made two other appearances that season against Preston and Blackburn, making his first start for the Royals away at Ewood Park in the final game of the 2015-16 season.
In 2016-17 he spent the season representing the Royals' U23s and he scored six goals in 37 appearances as he helped his side reach the Premier League Cup Final against Swansea City.
Returning to first-team affairs in 2019-20, he tested the waters by lobbing Willy Caballero in a pre-season friendly against Chelsea before notching his first two senior Reading goals against Plymouth in the League Cup that August, as the Royals travelled back to Berkshire 4-2 winners.
