Date of birth
Born in Hungary, Máté began playing for his local football team Tünet SE before his abilities were spotted by Hungarian League Division One side Debreceni VSC, where he would go on to spend the rest of his youth career.
Signing a professional contract with the club, Máté went on to make 153 appearances in total, including playing against Manchester United in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League in 2005.
Having started the 2006/07 season with his parent club, Debreceni then received a loan offer from a Premier League side, and that August Máté joined the Royals on a season-long loan.
He made his debut in a Reading shirt that September against Darlington in the Carling Cup – Scoring in the 86th minute to take the tie into extra-time and then penalties where the Royals emerged winners, converting four spot-kicks to two.
That was to be Máté’s one and only appearances for the club as a serious injury suffered in a reserve fixture against Chelsea would keep him side-lined for the rest of his stay.
After completing his rehabilitation at Reading, the Hungarian defender returned to Debreceni where he currently still plays his football at the age of 30.
