Afobe made his debut for Arsenal Reserves at 16 and in playing for the Arsenal U18s team, he had scored 72 times by the end of the 2009/10 season.

He signed his first professional contract in February 2010 with Arsenal, after having reportedly being scouted by Barcelona.

He made an impressive performance for the Gunners in the Emirates Cup on his first team debut against New York Red Bulls. From there he would suffer multiple injuries that were to keep him out of the game for six months.

On returning to fitness he was called in on loan by the Royals. Our incredible winning run had just been halted abruptly in a midweek defeat to Peterborough and, more worryingly, talismanic striker Jason Roberts had picked up an injury.

Brian McDermott acted fast, plucking the 19-year-old England youth international out of the Emirates on loan, and the forward started in the next game, a home clash with Blackpool at Madejski Stadium.

We won 3-1, but Roberts’ stay on the physio table was short-lived and Afobe only made two more substitute appearances in blue and white hoops, winning at West Ham and Southampton but never running out at a jubilant Madejski Stadium again until he joined thousands on the pitch to celebrate promotion after our 1-0 win here against Nottingham Forest.

Instead of following Reading to the top flight, he joined up with several other Championship sides in the following season including Bolton, Millwall and finally Sheffield Wednesday, before dropping down a tier to go out on loan to MK Dons.

Afobe became a regular in the side notching ten in 22 appearances. He’s currently moved back up to the Championship on a loan deal with Wolves, where in February 2015 he put one past his former employees Reading, however despite the setback, the Royals battled back to finish 2-1 winners at Molineux.
