Roberts began his footballing career with Middlesbrough in 1993 at the age of 18. After initial loan spells with Hartlepool, Wycombe and Bradford, he broke into the first team set-up at the Riverside for the start of the 1996/97 season.
He made 17 appearances for Boro that year, with the pick of the bunch being involved between the sticks in their replay fixture of the League Cup Final against Leicester City, and deputising for a cup-tied Mark Schwarzer in the final of the FA Cup against Chelsea at Wembley.
Roberts’ next appearance in a final would come two years later due to a loan spell with Division Two side Millwall. As part of 14 games as a Lion he again was given the opportunity to step out at Wembley, this time against Wigan for the Football League Trophy.
After a season spent with Luton, Roberts joined Reading on loan in January 2002 and went on to make six appearances for the club before returning back to Middlesbrough at the end of February.
His debut in a Royals shirt came during our 3-0 win against Blackpool at Madejski stadium, one of three appearances he made at home where he managed to keep a 100% win record during his time.
Another loan spell with Division Two Luton occurred the following season before Roberts signed permanently for Brighton in July 2003.
He tasted victory in a final on the third time of asking when the Seagulls made their way to the Millennium Stadium for the Play-off final in May. An 84th minute penalty earned Brighton their promotion to Division One and Roberts a first major honour of his career.
Then aged 29, a persistent back injury forced the shot-stopper to retire from his playing days in 2005, moving on to a career as a goalkeeping coach after graduating from Roehampton University with a First Class Honours Degree in Sports Science and Coaching.
He first took up the job as Goalkeeper coach with Yeovil town in 2009 as well as being their chief scout. Then, on 29th December, he left the Glovers for League One rivals Charlton Athletic where he still holds that tittle to this day, aged 39.
