The Glaswegian began his career with Dundee United in 1989, and he would remain with the Scottish side for the next decade. In that time he chalked up over 130 league starts, netting 11 goals.
Two of those goals came in one game, scoring twenty minutes apart in a 4-1 home pounding of Motherwell. His honours for the Terrors include helping them triumph in the Scottish cup in 1994, narrowly beating Rangers by one goal to nil to claim victory.
McLaren was then lured south of the border to Reading, a £100,000 transfer conducted by manager Tommy Burns. The Winger made his Madejski stadium debut in our 3-1 loss to Manchester City, having gone down to ten men when Alan Maybury was sent off in the 61st minute.
That appearance was one of nine he was to make in a hooped shirt, with six of them coming in front of the fans at Madejski.
Upon leaving the Royals he moved back north to play for clubs including Livingston, Kilmarnock, Partick Thistle and Ayr United. His last move saw him join Petershill in the West of Scotland Super League Premier Division back in 2009.
