Having come through the ranks at Norwich, McKeever moved to Peterborough but was snapped up by top flight Sheffield Wednesday in 1997 – the attack-minded Emerald Isler made five appearances for the Owls in the Premier League.

During his time at Hillsborough, he was loaned out to Bristol Rovers and then Reading, scoring in his first two Royals games at Stoke and Bournemouth.

The Derry-born Irish U21s international midfielder only made two Madejski Stadium starts during a brief loan spell with the Royals towards the end of the stadium’s inaugural season. His first coming in a 2-1 win over Wycombe in March 1999, his only other a week later against Manchester City.

A permanent move to Bristol Rovers transpired in 2001, but he slipped into non-league football three years later with Weston-super-Mare and never returned to league football.

He did the round-robin, switching to Gloucester City, Bath City and then Mangotsfield United, before returning to the Woodspring Stadium in 2009. In August that year he was forced to retire from the game due sustaining an injury, aged 30.
