During the current half-term break from school, 16 young Reading supporters aged between 6 and 12 attended a ‘Young Royals’ planning forum in the Players’ Lounge at Madejski Stadium.
The young fans and their families responded to our call on social media to join the session, where they had the opportunity to share ideas with the Royals – the club wanted to hear first-hand from young fans and find out what they’d like from a junior supporters’ club.
Reading FC’s Head of Marketing Amanda McDonnell and Sales Executive Jack Roberts – who was a member of Young Royals in his younger years – hosted the forum, and delved into why and how this group of young people became fans, their first game, what they love about matchday and what they’d like to see more of.
The young fans shared their favourite players – it was tightly contested but Ovie Ejaria proved the most popular – and they sang their favourite songs from matchday, where Logan’s rendition of Yakou’s song was a huge hit!
They told the club they really enjoy meeting players and getting their autographs before games, they love the hot dogs, and would like to see more entertainment at half-time – especially if it involved Kingsley giving out some free gifts!
Amanda McDonnell said, “It was great to hear from our young fans and how passionate they are about supporting Reading FC, and their football knowledge was amazing. It was also interesting to hear how families have influenced our young fans coming to games – Jack and I heard how aunties grandads, mums and dads were the people who introduced them to the Royals and encouraged them to support their local team.”
Reading FC are relaunching Young Royals for the 2020-21 season, so look out for more details over the next few months.
