🔜 Preview | Royals women back in action against Hammers

Reading travel to West Ham United Women in Conti Cup

4 November 2020

Reading FC Women take on West Ham United Women this evening in a Group D clash in the Continental Cup at Chigwell Construction Stadium.

It is the second round of group-stage fixtures in the competition, the first coming back in early October when Kelly Chambers’ side had the perfect start to their Continental Cup campaign under the lights of Madejski Stadium with a 4-0 win over Charlton Athletic.

A first-half strike from Danielle Carter, one within a minute of coming on from skipper Natasha Harding, a goal from Amalie Eikeland and a last-minute effort from Brooke Chaplen saw the Royals seal all 3 points in the opening game of Group D.

Tonight’s opponents West Ham travelled to Brighton & Hove Albion for their opening fixture of the competition and walked away with a 2-2 draw after full-time. However, as was the case when the Royals drew with Chelsea in the group stages last year, a penalty shootout decides who takes home an extra point. West Ham were victorious 4-2 on spot-kicks and as a result, currently sit a point behind Reading in Group D.

The last time we met

Reading have already travelled to West Ham this season, back at the start of October for the third round of FA Barclay’s Women’s Super League fixtures. A first-half goal for Lauren Bruton and a second-half penalty save from Grace Moloney saw Reading seal the 1-0 victory and leave a very wet Chigwell Construction Stadium with all three points.

Last season, Chambers’ Royals qualified in second place in their group, behind Chelsea, who Reading beat in the aforementioned penalty-shootout after a 1-1 draw in the final group-stage game. West Ham were part of Reading’s qualifying group that season too and were just behind the Royals in their attempts at qualifying. Reading eventually bowed out in the Quarter-Finals to Arsenal due to a late Kim Little goal for the eventual-finalists. The Quarter-Final made it three straight appearances in the knock-out stages for the Royals since the change in format, having reached the same stage the previous year and the Semi-Final in 2017-18.
